India eves succumb to Australia’s hera-‘PERRY’ in the third T20

Sydney Cricket Ground hosted an incredible game of cricket on Super Sunday with India eves taking on Australia in the third and the last of the T20 matches. The match went down till the last ball, with India falling short of 15 runs to register a clean sweep.

Mithali Raj won the toss and rightly elected to field first, knowing her team’s ability to chase big targets. India’s number one bowler Jhulan Goswami got it right the very first ball of the innings when she sent the Australia opener Alyssa Healy back to the dug-out. Pitching it slightly outside off and tempting Healy to drive, she had her bunny when Healy played it on the up straight to the point fielder Deepti Sharma. India would have expected to bundle out Australia after this fantastic start, however Beth Mooney (34) and Meg Lanning (26) took the game away from the visitors. Elysse Perry, who chose to play cricket instead of soccer today, made the most of it, when she bludgeoned 52 runs off just 42 balls, hitting four boundaries and three sixes. Rajeshwari Gayakwad was the pick of the bowlers for India grabbing two wickets, but was expensive as she gave away 23 runs in her four overs. Jhulan Goswami and Deepti Sharma were the other bowlers among wickets, who picked up one wicket apiece.

After chasing 141 runs in the first T20 at Adelaide, the visitors were pretty confident of repeating their heroics in this match. India came out to bat with a new opening pair in Mithali Raj and Vanitha VR, as Smriti Mandhana was recovering from the shoulder injury that she suffered while fielding. The openers got off to a flyer with four overs 32 for no loss. In the fifth over of the Indian innings, Rene Farrell deceived Raj by bowling a back of a hand delivery to rattle her stumps. Vanitha played well for her 28, but was dismissed by Jess Jonassen, thanks to an excellent running catch by Perry in the deep. Veda Krishnamurthy (21) and Harmanpreet Kaur (24) tried to consolidate, but both of them fell against the run of play. Mandhana came in to bat in the 11th over with India wanting 70 runs off 56 balls.  She manoeuvred the strike well but failed to find the odd boundary. Ellyse Perry had an amazing outing as she picked up 4-12 in her four overs, which was also her career best. India lost the match by 15 runs, but won the series 2-1. Ellyse Perry was adjudged as the Man of the Match for her match winning all-round performance.

India eves thrash Australia in the second T20

Though rain tried hard to help Australia from losing the match and ultimately the T20 series, there was no stopping the women in blue today at Melbourne. The intentions were right and they came out strong to face the mighty Aussies, riding on their previous win earlier this week.

Winning the toss and electing to field first, India bowlers and fielders did a good job, restricting Australia to 125-8 in 17.5 overs in the rain curtailed match. Australian skipper Meg Lanning batted well but was unlucky to get run out for 49 runs. The Indian fielders were as swift as a wind, accounting for two crucial run outs. Jess Jonassen chipped in with over a run a ball 27, but there was nobody lower down the order to capitalize on the start provided by the top order. At one stage Australia was cruising at 103-4 in 13.1 overs, but with the fall of Lanning, rest of the batting line-up collapsed like a pack of cards. Indian bowlers cashed on Lanning’s wicket and made a strong comeback in the game. Jhulan Goswami and Rameshwari Gayakwad picked up two wickets apiece.

Chasing 126 runs in 18 overs was always going to be tricky. However the experience of Mithali Raj (37*) and composure of Smriti Mandhana (22*) came in handy for the visitors. Both of them played exceedingly well, scored runs easily and pierced the gaps with surgical precision. The match was further reduced to a 10 over game, due to rain, with India chasing 66 runs of 10 overs. It was a cake walk for the visitors as they were already off to a flyer with 51 for no loss in 7.3 overs, just before it started raining again. It was a clinical performance from the Indians as they chased down the revised target in just 9.1 overs. India’s premium medium pace bowler Jhulan Goswami was adjudged as the Man of the Match for her brilliant bowling figures of 2-16 in four overs.

India leads the three match series 2-0, with one match to go. Sydney will host the third and the last match of the T20 series which will be played on the Super Sunday.

Brief scores: Australia Women 125-8 in 17.5 overs (M Lanning 49, J Jonassen 27; J Goswami 2-16, R Gayakwad 2-27) lost to India Women 69-0 in 9.1 overs (M Raj 37*, S Mandhana 22*) by 10 wickets (Duckworth-Lewis method)

Harmanpreet’s heroics help India eves beat Australia in the opening T20 fixture

When you have the odds of 8:1 in favour of Australia against India in women’s T20 cricket, who do you expect the next match to win? Australia? Just before the start of today’s play, Aussies were the favourites, and nothing changed when they put on board a formidable 140-5 in 20 overs. This was the highest chase that India would have to make, from India’s standpoint. To everyone’s surprise, India eves chased down the target comfortably, with eight balls to spare.

After seeing the debacle of their male counterparts in ODI series against the same opposition and learning from their mistakes, it seems that, Mithali’s girls were all-prepared to face the mighty Aussies.

Winning the toss and electing to field first at Adelaide Oval, India restricted Australia to 140-5 in 20 overs. A disciplined bowling effort alongwith some extra-ordinary fielding yielded rich dividends for India. Wickets were taken at regular intervals, catches were held on and pressure was created. Though Australia did not get off to a kind of start that they would have want to, but Beth Mooney (36 runs off 38 balls) alongwith the rest of the batting line-up ensured that the team put on enough runs on board. The turning point of Australian innings was the powerful partnership between Alex Blackwell (27 runs off 22 balls) and Alyssa Healy (41 runs off 15 balls). Healy smacked the Indian bowlers all-round the park, hitting five boundaries and two maximums. Poonam Yadav (2-26) was the pick of the bowlers, who deceived the Australians through her well-flighted deliveries.

Chasing 141 runs was always going to be a daunting task. Add to this the disappointing start which
India got, when their skipper Mithali Raj fell cheaply for four runs in the second over of India innings. Smriti Mandhana (29 runs off 25 balls) and Veda Krishnamurthy (35 runs off 32 balls) came together and stitched a beautiful partnership. Singles became regular, odd-boundaries were hit, and the 55-run partnership between them saw India in a comfortable position.  However it was not yet over, as India lost their three wickets in quick succession. In the end, it was Harmanpreet Kaur’s heroics which saw India home. She came in to bat in the 10th over when India still needed 79 runs to win. Harmanpreet showed her class as she scored a brilliant 46 off just 31 balls. India won the match in style as Anuja Patil finished off the game with a boundary. At the close of play, India scored 141-5 in 18.4 overs.

The second T20 will be played on 29th Jan at Melbourne.

Mumbai women Plate Group T20 champs: Journey to the crown

After playing the longer format, Mumbai eves were all-charged up to play the shorter version of the game. The senior women’s T20 tournament commenced on 2nd January 2016. Mumbai were placed in the Plate Group and had Saurashtra, Vidarbha, Uttar Pradesh and Tripura for company in Plate Group B. Mumbai played one match against each team in the league stage and to Mumbai fans’ joy, the Mumbai women remained invincible, winning all the four matches that they played in Lucknow. Undoubtedly Mumbai qualified for the knock out that was staged at Ranchi. Be it Lucknow or Ranchi, Mumbai women had just one aim; to clinch the T20 championship and elevate to the Elite Group next year. Haryana in the quarter-final, Himachal Pradesh in the semi-final and ultimately Uttar Pradesh in the final, the lion on the Mumbai jersey roared and pounced on the opponents.

If you look at Mumbai’s performance from the outset, it is clearly an envious one. Though you may not find any one player scoring exceptionally big or picking a fifer, what matters in the end is how well has the team performed as a unit; which is evident from the fact that Mumbai remained unbeaten throughout the tourney. Mumbai as it is known for the diverse set of people it has, women’s cricket also proved its diversity. On one hand we had senior cricketer Sulakshana Naik (155 runs in 7 matches) scoring the highest runs for Mumbai and on the other, child prodigy Fatima Jaffer (10 wickets in 6 matches) picking up maximum wickets for Mumbai. Under the able leadership of veteran cricketer Sunetra Paranjape, Mumbai proved its mettle on 15th January 2016 when it thrashed Uttar Pradesh by eight wickets and went on to win the Plate Group T20 championship. Well-played Mumbai and we all hope that you scale greater heights in future as well.
